5 Tips for Decorating with Photos

On this Mother's Day, children all over the country are probably giving one of the most sentimental gifts... a photograph.  Not only are photos a great way of remembering special occasions and milestones, they can also add something special to the decor in your house.  Here are a few tips on decorating with your photographs:
  1. Pick a Topic. Choose photos that are a similar theme.  All from the same setting or trip, one child through the years, or just your furry friend.
  2. Frame Colors. Once you have your photos picked out, select frames that are all the same color.  Even if your photos look different, your frames can still tie them altogether.
  3. B&W.  When in doubt, have your photos printed all in black and white.
  4. Get Hangin'.  Play around with the placement of the photos in a group together. Balance them symmetrically, or have a central photo and position the others around it.  Here's a great guide we found at www.annbeckphotography.com:

  5. Don't Forget Your Album! Substitute your new Blu Daffodil album for one of the photos. It's a great way to display your album and save some storage space.  Just purchase a plate holder at your local arts and crafts store and attach it to the wall.

Take Your Camera Everywhere

A phone camera is great to catch a last-minute photo with friends at a restaurant, or to take a picture at a store of the item you want to find later... but if you're serious about wanting to have more (and better!) photos of nature, your vacations, or your family, you need to take your camera everywhere you go.  It really doesn't matter what type of camera you have (although, I'll provide some specs to watch for in a later post), as long as you have it in your hand.  Don't be afraid to pause for a minute, grab your camera, and capture that perfect scene, or that funny face your child just made.  All of these moments will pass, but now you have them preserved for a lifetime.  More often than not, the people you're with will want a copy of your photos too! So while it might not be the most convenient option, bring your camera everywhere... and never miss a moment.

High Quality Photos with Affordable Cameras

At Blu Daffodil, we see a wide variety of photos that customers want to use in their new albums. More often than not, the quick snapshot you took with your point-and-shoot camera or smart phone is the best choice. You're in the moment and can capture exactly what you see, and save it forever. You don't need to be a professional photographer, or have an expensive camera. What you do want, is to make the most of the equipment you have. Be sure you have your camera set to the highest quality resolution possible. This will allow you the flexibility to crop in close, or englarge your image, without sacrificing quality. Most cameras and smart phones default to the highest quality possible, but you'll want to find out for sure. This can typically be found in the Menu or Settings option. Changing your settings to the highest resolution will decrease the overall number of pictures you can take with your memory card, but the quality makes it worth it.

This image was taken at the highest resolution on a Canon Powershot point-and-shoot camera.

This image was taken using a lower resolution on the same camera.

Something is in the works...

Kathy and I have been working really hard to get our new business up and running. Our website is about half done, our samples are almost ready, and we have some odds and ends to wrap up. One of the things we can show you so far is our brand new logo:
Blu Daffodil is a company that designs custom photo albums. We will take those photos that have been sitting on your hard drive, or in a box in the closet, and turn them in to beautiful keepsakes. Each album is individually designed based on the photos that are supplied, so no two are alike. We take pride in the quality and creativity behind our albums, and we look forward to sharing them with you.
